The Future of Digital Amateur Radio

Yaesu have just published an interesting paper on digital modulation in amateur radio

It looks like they are getting ready to make some serious announcements this year.

What will be very interesting is what is going to happen with respect to spectrum availability since between analogue and D-Star there is, as we know well, nothing much available. The first mover advantage is with Icom, so Yaesu system will need an overwhelming advantage to get a foothold in the market.The key deciding factors will likely be whether the new system is truly open, both in terms of system design and codec.
